Who has never heard of it? The "Buddenbrooks" novel by Thomas Mann, the Nobel Laureate. The cultural city of Lübeck has even dedicated one of the most exceptional literature museums in the world to him and behind the white baroque façade dating from 1758 brings the story of the Buddenbrooks alive.
Heinrich and Thomas Mann are two of Lübeck's most famous sons. The Buddenbrooks House in Mengstraße is dedicated to the two writers and the "Buddenbrooks" novel.
The world's most exceptional literary museum lies behind the white baroque façade dating from 1758. The world's only literature project originally arose from the Expo 2000.
A piece of world literature is brought to life in the exhibition "The Buddenbrooks" - a novel of the century. Enter the Buddenbrooks' piano nobile with Thomas Mann's Nobel prize-winning novel in your hand. Two of the rooms have been reproduced as a "walk-in novel" inviting you to take part in a literary game.
There is also space given to the origins of the novel: Its production, the Nobel Prize for literature awarded in 1929 and the worldwide reception - from translations to stage plays, radio plays and film adaptations.
The second permanent exhibition "The Manns - a literary family" chronicles the life and works of this "amazing family": From their international roots, the literary and personal departure from Lübeck, the different paths through life, the personal suffering from Germany, the individual goodbyes and information regarding the traces, the famous family left behind, can also be found. Visitors are invited to witness the intense personal conflicts within the Mann family which are documented in numerous pictures, film and sound recordings.
In 2008, Lübeck served as a film set for the "Buddenbrooks" movie.
