A large part of the summer events in Lübeck involve concerts within the framework of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. International stars of classical music and an aspiring generation of young talent provide an open invitation to the concerts and music festivals.
The Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival was founded in 1986 and, since then, has been considered a star in North Germany's cultural firmament with worldwide prominence and global appeal. It is a universe both diverse and vibrant, allowing the music to traverse elitist borders.
It casts off classical music's stuffy image and also transports music to places where it otherwise would not be heard. The Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival transforms even the most far-flung corners into an international concert stage, be it magnificent estates, thatched barns, historic cowsheds and stables, sophisticated manor houses, quaint churches, enchanted castle grounds, imposing shipyards and industrial sites.
Every year, thousands of people come to around 70 different venues. There are around 130 concerts and although the Festival focuses on classical music it is always possible for visitors to explore other different realms of sound - from old music to avant-garde, from choral music to crossover, from symphony concerts to drum evenings, from jazz to pop to world music.
The "Musical Festivals in the countryside" are a particular highlight in the festival calendar. As soon as the landowners of Emkendorf, Pronstorf, Stocksee or Wotersen open their doors to the public and families spread out their colourful picnic blankets, then it's time to enjoy great music in an informal atmosphere.
