Not just for those with a sweet tooth: In the marzipan salon you can discover just how this Lübeck delicacy is made. Sample the fine almond speciality in the Niederegger Café and take an artistic creation home with you.

Sweet temptation from the marzipan salon.

Marzipan's triumphal march began in Lübeck. The factory - still headquartered in Lübeck - was established by Georg Niederegger (1777 - 1856) and is still owned by the Niederegger family.

Directly opposite the Town Hall in the heart of the Old Town is the famous Café Niederegger with the marzipan salon. The history of the "harem confectionery" can be found on the second floor and takes the visitor back through the centuries tracing the origins of the almond speciality on its long journey from the orient to Lübeck. The biggest draw has to be the 12 life-size personalities made of marzipan: ranging from Hans Jakob Christoffel from Grimmelshausen to Thomas Mann to Wolfgang Joop, all fans of the famous Niederegger marzipan. You can buy the most beautiful marzipan souvenirs of the Hanseatic city, especially the magnificent Holsten Gate made of pure marzipan, on the ground floor. Even small figures such as cute teddy bears, lucky pigs or the famous colourful fruit made of marzipan are miniature works of art.
