Walking tour

Discover Travemünde from its most beautiful side
duration: approximately 90 minutes without sightseeing (no guided tour)
Casino – Kaiserallee – steep coast of Brodten – Strandpromenade – Brügmanngarten –
Passat – Light House – Vogtei – St. Lorenz church – Fishermen's Harbour

Start where in former times every holiday began: at the train station
Strandbahnhof!
Take a walk down the street into the direction of the sea and reach the Casino Travemünde on the left handside – one of Germany's most legendary gambling houses.
Facing the casino proceed down
Kaiserallee in westward direction. This street is well-known for its linden trees, one of Travemünde's landmarks. All in all you can find 1.014 of these broad-leaved trees which are box-shaped; at Kaiserallee there are 605 of these linden trees - many of which are around 120 years old. At the end of Kaiserallee turn right in order to get to the boardwalk. Keep going to the left and you reach the steep coast Brodtener Steilufer. Its picturesque, bizarre steep face has been formed by the ocean.
For thousands of years the Baltic Sea has been nibbling on the coast, every year more than one metre of the cliff is carried off. It is flushed away by the waves and then brought back again to the beach of Travemünde.

Then walk down to the water back into the direction of the boardwalk. Pass by the beautiful 5-star Co
lumbia Hotel Casino Travemünde and you will see the Brügmanngarten on the right hand side. In warm summer nights guests have the possibility to listen to concerts and watch movie performances.

Why don't you now board the passenger ferry to the Priwall peninsula? At the right you reach
the Passat, Travemünde's pride. Since 1959 this four-masted barque is owned by the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. After efficient restoration it is now being used as a swimming youth hostel, museum and event location (more about the Passat). Have you seen enough? The ferry will take you back to the other side. If you take a look to the right you will see the beautiful Lighthouse (further information about the lighthouse), one of the oldest in Germany. Ready for a shopping spree along the waterfront at Vorderreihe?
Between old gable houses and along the river Trave you have a lot of space to stroll. One of the most interesting buildings is the Vogtei at Vorderreihe 7 with its artful Late Baroque portal. The reeve, harbour commandant and guardian of the lights - he had to assure that everything was perfectly above-board in Travemünde - used to live here once. At the beginning of the 19th century the see fort Travemünde slowly started to change and became a seaside resort.
Behind the Vogtei proceed down to
St. Lorenz church. At Jahrmarkstraße 13 you will find the probably oldest house in town. The beautiful half-timbered building derives from the 16th century.
Other very beautiful and typical former fishermen and sailor cottages can be admired at Torstraße, Rose and Kurgartenstraße. Turn to your right from Jahrmarktstraße into the street "Baggersand" and you will reach the
Fischermen's Harbour. There you can buy fresh fish directly from board or allay your appetite straight away with one of the delicious fish sandwiches. Enjoy your meal!
