The Museum shows exhibits on Lübeck's early history, urban development and shipping industry and is located in Lübeck's most significant fortified gate.
The fortified gate from the 15th century is the landmark of Lübeck, which is symbol not only of the well-fortified medieval town but also of the self-confidence of the former Queen of the Hanseatic League.
Today the museum houses a presentation dedicated to the life and work of a Lübeck merchant in the late Middle Ages and early modern times. The merchant left its mark on the city's economic, cultural and social life.
The exhibition is part of a larger project, developed and presented by the federal states of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern named "Kiln-fired Giants. Development of Brick Gothic". The exhibition is on display at the Holstentor Museum on a permanent basis.
