Trail 5: From Water Trees to Green Paradises
Trade ensured that Lübeck, surrounded by water, became "Queen of the Hanseatic Cities". The water around the city hereby served not only as a transport route, but it also provided protection for the city. While gateways and barriers blocked access from the landward side, tree trunks chained together and known as "water trees" provided water-side protection against intruders. The remnants of this defence system may be noted in the landscaped Wallanlagen (Ramparts Gardens). Other popular leisure destinatnions are also situated close to the water, such as in Travemünde with its lively beach life and vibrant parks.
Romantic green oases behind old walls inspire dreamy contemplation in the Old Town. Outside the Castle Gate, the City Park, the former summer houses of rich merchant families with their lush gardens and cementeries steeped in historical significance all leave a lasting impression. the fascinating work of the garden designers Erwin Barth and Harry Maasz forms a link between many of the city's gardens. The extensive Carlebach Park constitutes a modern variant of the green paradise.
The trail is designed as a (3.7 km) pedestrian route for the southern part of the Old Town (ramparts). In the northern part of the Old Town gardens 2-6 can be accessed on foot or by bicycle along a rout extending to 8 km. The trail continues by bicycle (gardens 7-10) and also by boat to Travemünde. Total length of the ttrail: approx. 70 km.
