St. Mary's church

St. Mary's, the church of the Council of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, is the third-largest church building in Germany. Its construction took some 100 years. It serves as a model for countless Gothic style brick churches in the entire Baltic region.
Many works of art are found at St. Mary's, such as, for example, Gerhard Marcks' "The Cross of Triumph" of 1495, on the high choir above the Swarte altar. It is also home to the world's largest mechanical organ. From 1667 to 1707, the well-known church musician and composer Dietrich Buxtehude was St. Mary's organist and work master. The church bells that fell during the air raids in 1942 are reminders of the horrors of war.

Lübeck Cathedral

The Romanesque Cathedral, a three-naved pinnacled basilica, may well be Lübeck's oldest architectural monument. After the city became the see of the bishopric, in 1160, Henry the Lion laid the foundations to the mighty brick building in 1173. A wooden church had been built on the same location before.
During the air raids on Lübeck in 1942, the cathedral suffered severe destruction, with the vaults collapsing. Reconstruction did not commence until 1960, after St. Mary's had been rebuilt. Work on the cathedral cost some 13 million marks. The rebuilding of the Paradise in 1982 brought restoration efforts to a successful conclusion. The Lübeck Cathedral houses several works of art, in the first place the 17 meter tall Triumphal Cross by Bernt Notke (1477). The astronomical clock that was added in 1625 is still running with its original works. Only the cloister in the south transept (to the museum in the cathedral) remains from the erstwhile monastery.

St. Jacob's church

The three-naved brick church (built in 1334) is the church of boatmen and seafarers and was consecrated together with St. Mary's and St. Peter's.
St. Jacob's Church was largely spared during the bombing raids in World War II as well.
The sinking of the four-masted barque "Pamir" in 1957 is commemorated by the lifeboat that was salvaged. There is an ensemble of three-storey brick gutter houses, built in 1601, in front of St. James's Church, which used to be the residence of pastors and preachers of St. James.

The highlights include the carved choir (1587) by Tönnies Evers the Younger as well as the Gothic wall paintings in the choir and in the spire hall.

This Roman church, once three-naved, was built between 1227 and 1250. It was enlarged to a five-naved Gothic hall church in the 15th and 16th century. After being destroyed in the war, rebuilding efforts did not commence until 1958, so the pyramidal tower roof was not rebuilt until 1961. At an elevation of 50 metres, the view platform provides a magnificent panorama of Lübeck and the surroundings.

St. Catherine's church

The mendicant order church from the 14th century is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. The niches in the stern brick facade hold the now famous figure frieze by Ernst Barlach and Gerhard Marcks. The interior, with its impressive high choir, harbours exceptional works of art, including a monumental painting by the Venetian painter Tintoretto.
