From castle to spa
Count Adolphus III of Schauenburg and Holstein founded Travemünde in 1187. Until then, the town was merely a castle. The castle was situated on Stülper Huk.
1204 Travemünde had its first port in.
1235 the first church was built.
1316 a lighthouse keeper was employed.
1464 a mole was built to keep the Trave from silting up.
1539 Dutch masons erected a 39 m high lighthouse which was struck and destroyed by lightning in 1827.
1557 construction on the Church of St. Lorenz was completed.
1625 a plague devastated the city.
1802 Travemünde was declared a seaside resort. Until then, the only other two spas in Germany had been Heiligendamm and Norderney.
1824 the first steamer began its route between Lübeck and Travemünde.
1825 saw the opening of the first gaming casino, which operated until 1872.
1829 the lighthouse was rebuilt in its present form.
1831 a regular shipping service to St. Petersburg, Riga and Reval (Tallinn) was established.
1879 construction of the seaside health resort began. The resort remained useable until 1951.
1889 sailors met for the "Travemünde Week" for the very first time.
In 1908, the beach promenade was built.
1949 tourists began to return to Lübeck and Travemünde. The casino opened at the same time.
1953 the passenger ship services to the Scandinavian countries was established and extended year after year.
1957 the Minister of the Interior of Schleswig-Holstein declared Travemünde a "seaside therapeutic spa".
1974 the lido centre featuring three saltwater pools, known today as AQUA TOP, opened.
1989 100th Travemünde Week
2002 - 2000 Summer, Travemünde will turn 200 years old.
